Calm and clear

Baby has been most calm today, which naturally makes me panic. There have been usual stirrings as per text book non-hyper foetuses, and her heartbeat is as normal. 32-34 beats in 15 seconds, which is what it has been since ever I first counted. So no real need to panic, but I do.

I am extraordinarily tired today, I actually slept most of last night - aside from being woken up for snorting which nearly resulted in a broken leg of husband - and still flaked out for another couple of hours during the day. It is marvellous to be able to have that time, school does occupy the children effectively and longly. I am acutely aware of the time I won't have once baby arrives, so I am well and truly relishing maternity leave as it should be.

Although I do have a fair bit to do around the house, but a potter here and a potter there is getting me there. The BHF are collecting the old telly, a dressing table and chair (currently occupying the space where the cot will go) on Tuesday and hopefully I can foist some books upon them as well. At some point between now and baby being about 2/3 months old, we ideally need to rehome the gigantic tv unit so we can accommodate a dining table and playpen in the living room. And at some point early next year we shall do the moving house thing.

Pelvis sore again as I had to walk a fair distance to the school from the car as I was a little late to the school. I do need to arrive super sharp so as to get close. I didn't take the crutches as they slow me down and that was probably an error. Sitting down for a while on my magic cushion has helped as usual though, all is not lost. A quiet day required tomorrow though.

Sore, tired, sore, tired

Gah. Very sore today, the daily swimming lessons at the pool with lots of steps, not being able to use crutches and immense heat is getting to me. Painfully. Also, we went to Pizza Hut for tea and I can safely say that I won't be eating out again in a hurry. Ouchie! Pelvis v v sore when I sit down for a prolonged time, unless it's on my cushioned chair of cushionness.

This isn't a special chair, it's a regular Ikea Poang, with a huge fluffy cushion on top. Seated comfort, but only in conjunction with my feet raised on a similar huge fluffy cushion on a foot stool. The feet up position seems to help as much as the cushioning. Sigh.

New excruciating pain today: my
right nipple is on fire. Extremely sore and sensitive. Additional boobie problem, my bras (newly purchased jumbo sports bras no less) are all suddenly too tight round my back. I guess my ribs have expanded, I need some bra expanders. Debenhams sell them, I need to get me to Debenhams. Easier said than done unfortunately as it is in the middle of the pedestrianised high street.

Which reminds me of a nark. Some councils issue temporary blue badges for pregnant ladies with pelvic pain. I currently have to drive to places I wouldn't dream of taking the car, because I can't walk far enough. I also need to get parked close to where I want to be, and I need a reasonable sized space. A temporary badge would allow me disabled parking privileges and also free parking. I object to paying £1 to park 500 yards from my home while infinitely more mobile people than I park willy nilly. Fife Council issue temporary badges for people who have a temporary condition that is expected to last more than 12 months. Thank you Fife Council! I may complain, I probably won't. If I can find someone to email I might.

I'm not enjoying it today. Even the kicks are predominantly painful over amazing. Oh to be at 39 weeks...

Changes that have come over me

Pelvis watch: not good. I had to do a fair amount of crutch free walking today and oh, I can't! Swimming lesson for the boys first off, which is every day this week and involves rather a lot of stairs.

I then spent most of the rest of the day lying down, but had to nip out to asda in the evening. I cannot do supermarkets. Trolleys are out as I can't push them, crutches are out as I need my hands. So it's a basket waddle. Not good. And the pain by the time I got back was ridiculous, I could barely put one foot in front of the other.

I am displeased to note that despite the bump now being on the very large side of huge, I still have the flap of skin below. How unfair is that? I guess twins make that flap inevitable, but still.

On a brighter note, we have booked a short break for the last weekend of the holidays. Just to Dumfries, I'm not prepared to travel far, but it will be ace to have that to look forward to.

And I received my Practical Parenting subscription gift: an Avent breast pump with two bottles and a thermal bag. We have an Avent steriliser and we used Avent for the twins, so its familiar. I was drawn to Tommee Tippee but they don't fit well in the steriliser. We were a little underwhelmed by the Avent bottles on account of slight leakage when mixing, but all bottles have some people who have that same complaint! Well nifty for zero cost though, I priced it up in asda and it would cost well over £30 to buy what I got. The subscription is less than that, and I'd buy PP anyway, I like it best of the pregnancy/baby mags.

A breast pump, yes, I did mean to get that as I do fully intend to give breastfeeding a try. Having spoken to a friend about birthing options I found myself pondering a VBAC again, but I think not. Stats are not favourable.

Many thoughts. Many.

Procrastination

Oops.

I have an MSc Dissertation due in on August 15th.
This is me working on it.

The boys are off to their grandparents for a couple of days, leaving me some peace and quiet to get on with writing. And so I can produce words about the subject - safety of cycling - to the order of none. I can't get my baby addled brain around it. I thought once I got into it, the words would come. But no. Nothing.

Words written: 1000 (exactly). All pasted from a previous version. Needs padded, cannot pad.

Update on pregnancy, which seems to have become Pelvis Watch:

Having gone out and about both weekend days, I am rather broken. Saturday's expedition to the beach was moronic, I cannot walk on sand. So yesterday's trip to the meadows, involving a short flat walk only, should have been ok. Whether due to the soreness from the beach, or just general can't-walk-any-more-even-with-crutches, I don't know, but I could barely make it to the car. In fact, I didn't, I had to stop and send hubby for the car to collect me.

Today I drove the boys to Edinburgh, about a 30 mile round trip, to drop them off. Seriously sore again, it now seems to hurt to drive. Tomorrow I have a full day of no children and no need to leave the house, so I will take it very easy and rest up the pelvis, and see if I can undo the damage from the weekend. Very concerned that, with the exception of the sand, the walking of the last two days has not exceeded what I will have to do in order to do the school run after the holidays.

People are being very kind, I am in full receipt of lots of sympathy and kind offers. I feel humbled and very ungrateful for previous moanage.

Baby is doing fine, I believe. She is very active anyway, kicking away enthusiastically, but not frantically. Current dilemmas consist of a middle name as hubby doesn't like "May", and my futile attempts to talk him into a 3D scan. Which costs £115 or so and isn't really necessary in the slightest. My main concern is to double check the gender, which is stupid.  While I know ultrasound gender predictions can be wrong, nobody I have known has ever been told incorrectly, and in our case I could see for myself a lack of dangly bits and the presence of the tell tale three lines. The sonographer was pretty confident as well, even though she - as presumably is the custom - used the word "probably". Frequent movements, steady growth and the lack of any ominous symptoms leave me unconcerned as to the need to check on the baby (any new developments would manifest in some way that would not need a 3D scan to spot, or which a 3D scan would not spot). So it would be a double check gender spot and a slightly freaky image of the baby that's going to be here in 12 weeks. For over £100. Hmmmm.

Activate word production related to cycling not babies, starting NOW...

Still sitting (mostly)

I CAN'T WALK!!!

Ok, that's not true. I can, and with crutches it doesn't actually hurt. I feel a bit like the crutches are no good and I'm waving them about pointlessly, but the pain doesn't come and I can feel a lot of pressure in my arms, so I guess all that pressure isn't on my pelvis. There's certainly a big difference if I go from leaning on the crutches to not leaning on them; I can feel the pressure transfer through to my feet, obviously passing via the pelvis.

It's hard work though and I feel sooooo self conscious. And not being able to carry things is a pest. I had a jacket on today on the way to the school, which I removed and tied round my waist only to have it drop off seconds later. Picking up is not my forte at the moment so much grr-ing was required.

People are very sympathetic to me-with-crutches, which I find very embarrassing. Nope, there is no pleasing me. Lack of sympathy annoys; sympathy embarrasses. I know that people do care and the lack of attention is because I appear/claim to be capable, and I am aware of appearing very incapable. But it is nice how caring people actually are. In my ungrateful moments I think - but never say - "what do you think I've been on about the last couple of months???" when asked what I've done to myself. Pelvis no worky. I definitely mentioned it to, erm, everyone.

So. Other pregnancy things.

Gestation: 26+5
Movement: lots and lots
Other symptoms: indigestion, stingy boobies, a very large abdomen, and that is all.

The movements are amazing. I can't get enough of them. It makes me wonder in amazement that there is actually a human being inside there, that will soon be out and growing up and being a proper little person. From a few tiny cells inside of me, to a person.

I do feel quite astonished when I look at my huge five year olds and struggle to imagine how they ever were two foetuses side by side in my abdomen. And the whole thing just happens, because we copulated at the right times there are three new people. All I've done is not break them.

Shut up, pessimistic "yet".

Crutched

Well, I've got crutches now. And I have to say, they help a LOT. I even slower than I was without them, and there's the obvious downside of not being able to carry anything - something I forgot to consider when taking my maternity notes and a tiny handbag. My rucksack will have to be my handbag in case of needing to carry anything.

The physio asked how I was when moving my legs to the side. For the last few days it has been very painful, if I'm sitting and I let my leg flop to the side, it hurts. Legs must point straight forwards at all times, or the pelvis objects.

Based on this, the physio reckons a c-section would probably be best, as I would be very limited in positions to labour in. This pleases me. For one, I feel less like a section is a cop out for every additional reason I have. Plus, I would guess a consultant would be less likely to try and talk me round to a VBAC if pain is a consideration.

I shortly have to go to the school to collect the boys. I am really apprehensive about going with crutches. Having had to walk a fair way back to the car at the hospital, I know that they will make the walking part less arduous, but I feel incredibly self conscious.

I do also feel that I should be used as a caution to young girls. What with my twins and my crutches I feel I make a far more effective deterrent than a crying baby doll.

Pain and Luncheoning

Lunch out for a second time in as many days!! What luxury!

A nasty moment this morning when it was suggested that bananas should be avoided in pregnancy.

What???!!!!$**^|!?

But it is ok. They are good. They are recommended, they are indeed a pregnancy superfood. Phew! I bought a bunch to celebrate, being as I was down to the last banana in the house.

I am told I am more pleasant in this pregnancy than my previous one. I don't entirely agree, I don't seem to be being very pleasant, but I was in a good mood today, at least in part because of having lunch with my friends two days in a row. Also lunchtime equals awakeness and I quite probably subjected my poor friends to evening grumpiness before. Who knows? I am feeling mellow and contented right now, which is nice.

I should be happy today anyway, it is the happiest day of the year, according to some boffinery. Although there's some logic about summer weather and holiday plans, neither of which apply here.

I do have impending maternity leave in THREE WEEKS. Well, five weeks, but I finish work 3 weeks today. Wooo!

Due to bad planning, I got a lift to the school in a two seater car, so we had to walk back. I cannot now do that one mile walk at all, it was almost unbearably sore. I'm almost at the point of not being able to walk anywhere. Yikes. At least I am vindicated in my decision to drive the one mile each day, something I am normally opposed to.

The boys have been given a DVD to watch and a DS to play so I can lie in a warm bath, which is about the only sure way to alleviate the pain.

Warm?? Ha. It's fairly hot or it would be pointless. My logic in this piece of advice ignoring is that I never have baths so hot that my temperature rises, nor so that my skin goes pink. Hot tubs are a no-no as they maintain the temperature whereas as regular bath cools fast enough to be safe for pregnant mommas.

And I had baths all the way through with the twins and everyone *knows* if you survive something one time it is therefore safe.

I like baths, I do. Not least because baby is very active in the bath, and has been since very early weeks. Which I am told is not possible but I know what I felt and it was at the same time I feel definite kicks. She's a wriggly un all right, so it's possible. I like seeing my belly undulate with baby jiving.

The weather did somewhat defeat me today. Glorious sunshine first thing meant I got dressed in a summer maxi dress and sandals, because the dress doesn't go with the other one pair of shoes I can wear just now. Checking of the weather report - after dressing - revealed that it was to rain all day. Now, getting dressed is no mean feat these days so changing was not an option. Instead I looked utterly insane with aforementioned attire, plus a raincoat and brolly. Itty bitty sandals not good for rain, floaty dress bit odd with coat.

Well, if you're not allowed to look a bit mad when you're pregnant...
